Category A1 Rules For Motorcyclists

Category a1 rules are for those who wish to ride small motorbikes. These motorcycles have capacity of up to 35 kW. They are not derived from vehicles that have more than double their power.


The open category of drone operations can be divided into three subcategories A1 to A3. You can fly drones with the class label C0 or A1 in the subcategory A1 (flying over people) up until January 2024.

A1

Category A1 is one of the three EASA drone categories and applies to aircraft with a maximum take-off mass (MTOM) of up to 25 kilograms. It requires a record of flight as well as a flight schedule and an identification system for remote use, and a geoawareness. The drone must be visible to the pilot at all at all times. It is prohibited to fly over people or areas used for recreational, commercial or industrial purposes. The drone should also remain less than 120 meters above the ground level.

The applicants for an A1 license must have at least 16 years of riding two-wheeled motor vehicles. They must also complete the mandatory basic training and have passed a theory test and a practical test. Additionally, they must have an official medical certificate.

A1 license holders are allowed to drive mopeds with a cylinder capacity of no more than 1250 cc, and a power-to-weight ratio that is not more than 0.01 kW/kg. They are also able to drive motorcycles that have a maximum cylinder capacity of 125 cc as well as trikes or quad bikes, as well as quad-bikes.

The category A1 driving license is designed to give easier access to the next vehicle category, which allows license holders to drive vehicles with a maximum mass of up 35 kW. This is an incentive to get some experience driving less powerful vehicles prior to moving on to higher licence categories.

From January 1st, 2024, existing drones without a CE mark are able to be used in subcategory A1. A2

You can also fly drones with the maximum weight of 4kg in the A2 category However, they must be kept at a safe distance from people when taking off and landing. If you want to fly larger drones, you must apply for a specific category operator's permit, which requires completing the General VLOS Certificate (GVC) training and flight assessment, plus preparing an Operations Manual. A2 can also allow you to fly transitional drones that are not yet CE marked, but which have been modified to lower the chance of collisions with people. It is only possible to fly these drones with A2 until the end of 2022, following which they'll need to comply with A3 rules.

The A1 and A2 categories are designed to help you become a safe and confident motorcyclist. The number of lessons needed will depend on your capability and the progress you are making in learning, however, you must complete a certain amount of special rides. This includes at least five lessons on country roads or highways, as well as three in dawn or darkness.

A3

This category allows flights with drones that have the maximum mass for take-off of up to 25 kilograms. Although it is a lower risk operation, extreme precautions are required to prevent the risk of accidents. A distance of 150 metres is required between drones and residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational areas. This tier is further divided into sub categories, A1, A2 or even A3. It is required to be at least 30 metres from any third party when flying at a height of flight, or 5 metres in slow flight mode.

Drones with the Class Identification Label C2 may be operated under subcategory A2 when they meet the requirements of size, and the remote pilot has passed a knowledge test. This test is designed for remote pilots to test their knowledge of the technical and operational mitigations that address the extra risks associated with flying slightly larger drones (class A2, less than 4kg mass), close to people. The certificate of ability to fly Category A2 is given after successful completion of this test.

Due to the limited supply of certified drones in this category, there are 'transitional' arrangements that permit non-certified 'legacy drones to be operated in the categories A1 and A2 for two years after the new EU regulations are in the market. Legacy drones cannot be flown over people and must be equipped with an A2 CofC.

To operate a drone under this category, you need to first take the online test for identification of flyers and then pass a theory test. Additionally, you must declare that you have gained some practical knowledge of your drone, and submit a written declaration of competence. These requirements are similar to the driving licence model, where those who first get an endorsement for a less powerful vehicle category will be able to be granted access to a higher category.

A4

The DOH is currently working on specific guidelines to be used for category A4. They will be in line with other procedures and include details such as the number of dressing changes each day. In this category, drones with an identification label for class C0 and C1 are permitted to fly within a minimum distance of 50 metres from individuals who aren't involved. This is a very low-risk subcategory, however, strict precautions should be taken to prevent accidents. Drones that do not fall in either A1 or A2 must pass an additional test of theoretical knowledge to be able to operate in this subcategory.

This test aims to determine the knowledge of the additional dangers of flying drones close to people. The certificate of competence is issued upon passing this test. The pilot must maintain at least 30 meters from any person who is not involved or 5 metres when flying in a slow-flying mode.

If you're looking to obtain a motorcycle licence you must pass an amount of training lessons in order to take the test, and then pass the practical test. The amount you need to complete depends on your age, skill level and learning progress. A minimum of 12 90-minute classes must be completed.

The new category E effectively amalgamates class A1 (retail) and class A2 (financial and professional services) and class B1 (offices), class A4 (restaurants/cafes) and classes A5 and B5 (hot food takeaway).
